Why backup off-site if we already have a tape backup system?
Tape backup technology is dated. Every morning following a tape backup you should receive a mail from the software with the success details. The problem is that the software will tell you that it has written to tape but there is no guarantee that the tapes accepted the data. Tapes are similar to old video cassettes and are not durable.
Tape backups are slow and it takes time to retrieve one file from a backup
What is the difference between backing up on-site or off-site?
Off-site backups are your only source of retrieving data in the event of a disaster. If you have a fire, break-in or hardware failure you will be relying on your off-site backup to retrieve your data. It is also essential for the data to be stored in two separate data centres to prevent failures at this level.
Where will my data be stored?
Online Backup: With Arion Online Backup your data will be store in two separate data centres in Ireland. Online Backup from Arion covers you under the data protection act and also allows us to guaranteed that we will have all of your data on-site the next business day following a disaster
How long will the online backup take?
For the initial backup an external harddrive will be brought on-site and all the relevant data will be stored on it. The harddrive is then taken to the data centre where it is transferred to the host servers before being duplicated on to anther data centre. Following these steps only incremental backups need to take place. These backups happen in the early hours of the morning so that there is no contention with normal bandwidth use. Once setup a typical daily backup takes 20-30 minutes.
How secure is Arion Online Backup?
Our Online Backup is far more secure that on-site storage. Your data is fully encrypted with AES technology, password protected with digital certificates.
Is there a data retention period?
Arion Online Backup will save the last 28 days of deleted items as well as the backup from the first of the month for the last three months. With normal tape backups you will only get retention of two weeks with a 10 tape rotation policy.
How do I retrieve single files from the retention area?
Each company will choose a unique user name and password. By logging into your data through the Client Log in (Link) you can retrieve the specific file in seconds and download it to any location. Initially you will be trained how to do this step by step with full ongoing support
What happens if I loose connection to the internet?
If you loose connection to the internet either by broadband failure or for any other reason you will not be able to backup off-site. From our monitoring tool we will see that a backup was unsuccessful and will contact you to see what the issue is. Once the broadband link has been re-established, the Online Backup will continue as usual.
